Thanks to our star fundraisers and supporters in Goa

From our past reports, you might already be familiar with Jackie and Harry (alias DJ Rick Shaw) and their fundraising activities in Candolim for International Animal Rescue Goa. Last season they raised enough money for our centre to enable us to purchase a new vehicle and this season they are back in action working to get the public to support us.

Last spring a kind supporter donated a Chelsea football shirt signed by all the players for Jackie and Harry to auction and raise funds. As the shirt was donated towards the end of last season we decided to hold on to it and use it for fundraising during the peak months this year instead.

The event took place on 28 January in J29 Sports Bar in Candolim. We had approached the owner, Jerry, a few weeks before to enquire if he would be interested in hosting the event. J29 is North Goa’s biggest sports bar with live football matches shown on big screens almost daily. Being very popular with the English football fans we knew we would be able to draw in a crowd. Jerry was more than happy to help us and even sponsored a newspaper advert to publicise the event in advance.

On the night of the event Chelsea was playing Nottingham Forest so plenty of Chelsea fans were in the house. We had 80 English football teams on sale for RS250/- each and the winning team was to be drawn when all teams were sold. The night was rather slow to start with but guests soon got in the mood and we managed to sell all the teams and draw the winner before midnight. The winning team was Huddersfield and the lucky ‘owner’ of this team was Sam Doulan. She walked away with the prize and a bottle of bubbly courtesy of Jerry and J29. The raffle raised RS20.200/- for the animals in Goa.

On 31 January Jackie and Harry were in the spotlight again, this time at the Seagull Restaurant in Calangute owned by Andrew Braganza. Andrew has been a valued supporter of IAR for many years and has embarked on a project to raise funds for a new ambulance for our centre. Combining last season’s funds raised with this season, RS151.000/- has been raised at the Seagull. Last season Jackie and Harry worked with him to help him reach his goal and we decided to repeat the success.

Andrew kindly took on responsibility for advertising the event - a night of great tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s, a great raffle and Bingo, and amazing prizes for the winners. Lots of local businesses supported the event by donating prizes which included: Go-karting vouchers, beauty treatments, Jet Ski rides, CDs etc.

The night was a huge success and everybody who joined in had a great time and threw themselves into helping us raise money for the animals. Despite various technical difficulties (Harry’s equipment was too much for the local power supply to handle) all problems were overcome. The total raised was RS14.466/-

According to new regulations, no establishment is to have any form of live entertainment after 10pm, so to enable us to carry on a bit longer we relied on permission from the local police. Luckily they supported the event and let us carry on until midnight!
