India: Goa : Resident Dogs
The shelter at Animal Tracks in Goa provides a temporary home for most of the dogs that pass through the gates. They are brought in to be sterilised and treated before being returned to their territory. But some dogs end up staying as permanent residents at the centre.
Sometimes a dog that has recovered from a particularly complicated surgery or illness may struggle to survive back on the street. In those cases we will try to keep the dog with us. Or a dog might have suffered severe mental trauma, rendering it unable to fend for itself. Custard is one such example.
Sadly some dogs are abandoned by their owners and we take them in and put them up for adoption.
Then there are dogs like Brownie who are dropped back in their own area but return time after time because they like living at the centre. In the end we accept them as part of the family.
And let’s be honest. Though our hearts go out to every single dog we see, occasionally there will be one that manages to charm us so much that we just can't let it go!
