Two charged for tiger smuggling in Vietnam

Fri 11 July 2008 14:00 UK — Asia,Big Cats

Picture for article Two people from Vietnam have been charged with smuggling tigers.

The thanhniennews.com website cites a report in local paper Tuoi Tre that revealed that Nguyen Quoc Truong and Nguyen Thi Thuy Mui have been prosecuted for smuggling both live and dead tigers into the country.

According to the report, the pair were apprehended loading two tigers onto a truck in the Thanh Tri district of Vietnam's capital, Hanoi.

Subsequent investigation by the police found four dead tigers in one of the smuggler's homes. They also uncovered stoves which were being used to make glue from animal bones.

The pair claimed that they had purchased the tiger carcasses from the Hanoi Zoo. Officials from the zoo later admitted they had sold animals without the approval of the forest management agency.

Ms Mui said that she had purchased the two live tigers from another trader for VND117 million (£3,500).

Police said they were still investigating the case.

Recently, research published in the Public Library of Science One journal showed that most people in China support their country's ban on the trade of wild tiger products.
