Rare red kite dies after shooting

Wed 25 June 2008 14:00 UK — Europe,Birds

Picture for article A rare red kite has died after it was shot on Berwickshire grouse moor late last week.

The BBC reported that the rare bird died last week (June 19th) from injuries it sustained as a result of the shooting.

According to the report, it was found by walkers and taken to a vet with injuries to its wing and back. However, the vet was unable to prevent it dying from the internal injuries it was suffering from.

There is growing concerns about rising wildlife crime in the Boarders area, the BBC noted. This killing is the second of a rare bird in the region in recent months.

Earlier this year, one of the only pair of breeding golden eagles in the Boarders was apparently poisoned deliberately.

While red kites are only listed as 'near endangered' across the globe, their numbers in the UK are considered to be dangerously low.

In fact, the birds were initially declared extinct in the UK in the late 19th century but were reintroduced in the 1990s. It is now believed around 400 breeding pairs live on the island.
