Former local politician arrested for poaching in India

Wed 18 June 2008 13:45 UK — Asia,Ungulates

Picture for article Police in the east of India have confirmed that they arrested a former government official in a swoop to stop poaching in the area.

The local Statesman newspaper reported that officials in Jajpur arrested three people in the anti-poaching raid. One of the men used to be a democratically elected village leader known as a sarpanch.

It is believed the men are accused of entering the nearby Mohagiri forest close to Ashokjhar and illegally killing a number of rare deer.

The report added that the poachers then argued and this led to one of them reporting the others to authorities.

"A joint raid conducted by forest officials and local police led to seizure of the meat and the arrows used for poaching," the newspaper concluded.

Recently, authorities in Nepal revealed that they were concerned that members of the armed forces were involved in poaching activities in the country.

The Press Trust of India said that these fears were first raised when a serving army personnel was arrested as part of a crackdown on rhino killing.
