Russian coast guards step up efforts to stop poaching
Tue 06 May 2008 14:00 UK — Asia,Marine Wildlife
Reports suggest that Russian officials have stepped up efforts to curb poaching in its Far Eastern waters.
The local RIA Novosti news agency claimed that two foreign-registered vessels were detained by coast guards over the weekend on suspicion of poaching marine wildlife.
It reported that one of the ships was registered in Sierra Leone and the other was out of Panama.
The first was found to contain four tons of cod, two tons of herring and 1,200 crab traps, while on the second 13 metric tons of crabs were discovered. It is estimated that the illegal catch was worth over £15,000.
Separately, the news agency reported that courts in Russia had decided to confiscate four Japanese fishing vessels involved in illegal fishing activities.
The boats were detained late in 2007 after Russian officials suspected them of poaching near the disputed South Kuril Islands.
Earlier this year, the four captains were fined over £2,000 each.
