"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Poachers target South African national park

Mon 12 May 2008 14:00 UK — Africa,Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos

Picture for article Poachers are increasingly targeting South Africa's Kruger National Park, government officials have revealed.

The South African Press Association reported that Gareth Morgan, a government spokesperson on environmental affairs, said that 44 white rhinos and 31 buffaloes were killed by poachers in the park over the last four years.

"In total 249 mammals were killed by poachers in Kruger during this period," Mr Morgan reportedly said in response to a parliamentary question.

"While there is no acceptable level for poaching in a protected area, it is clear that these figures remain disturbingly high, especially for white rhinos."

He added that the government was now looking at the measures that park authorities were taking to reduce poaching.

"It will be important to determine whether the parks have sufficient anti-poaching personnel and whether there are vacant posts," he explained.

The largest game reserve in South Africa, Kruger National park covers 18,989 square kilometres. It is home to an estimated 25,150 African buffalo, 200 cheetahs, 350 black rhinos and 3,000 hippos.
