"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Deer poaching 'kingpin' apprehended in India

Wed 07 May 2008 14:00 UK — Asia,Ungulates

Picture for article Officials in India claim to have arrested the 'kingpin' of a poaching gang.

The local Statesman newspaper reported that forestry officers apprehended a man named Rasananda Das near the Satabhaya protected forest zone.

When searched, the man was found to be carrying the body of a felled spotted deer.

The paper reported that the man was placed in judicial custody and accused of heading up a poaching syndicate which has been operating in the Bhitarkanika national park.

Officials revealed that it is proving very difficult to accurately assess or stop deer poaching in the region.

They explained that many settlements were close to the protected area of the park and that animals often strayed into these villages. Here, it is easy for poachers to catch the animals using nets.

Recently, Indian wildlife experts also expressed concern about the rise in rhino poaching in the country.

The Newstrack India agency said that six rhinos had been killed in the state of Assam in recent months.
