"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Man begins sentence for horrific treatment of dogs

Fri 15 February 2008 14:00 UK — Europe

Picture for article A man from Norwich charged with animal cruelty has begun a 12-week prison sentence today (February 15th).

Kevin Matthews allowed his two Staffordshire Bull Terriers to go without veterinary treatment for two weeks despite them both having severe injuries to their faces.

The dogs, named Deaf and Max, were involved in a fight at Mr Matthew's home and were both left with muscle tissue hanging from their jaws, which became infected.

A local dog warden visited the address on August 20th last year after receiving complaints about the noise caused by the animals, the Norwich Evening News reports.

Mr Matthews was sentenced yesterday at Norwich Magistrates Court and the presiding judge described the case as a 'horrific' example of animal cruelty.

According to the paper, Jonathon Eaels, prosecuting, said: "The vet said the wounds inflicted on Max, who had multiple wounds to the left side of his face, were affecting the dog extensively and the severity of the infection in the wounds indicated they had been left for at least two weeks, and the dog had been made to suffer unnecessarily.

"In describing Deaf, he said it was one of the worst cases of infection because of lack of veterinary provision he had ever seen."

In addition to his sentence, Mr Matthews was also disqualified from keeping dogs for ten years.
