"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Bald eagle's nest destroyed, tough punishment sought by activist

Mon 18 February 2008 14:00 UK — North America

Picture for article Those persons responsible for destroying the natural habitat of a rare bald eagle in the US town of Millville, New Jersey should be severely punished.

That is according to local activist Jane Galetto, who believes that whoever ordered that a 70ft tree which sheltered the bird's nest be chopped down should be "brought to justice".

Ms Galetto, president of Citizens United to Protect the Maurice River and Its Tributaries, wants local residents to put pressure on the US Attorney's Office to try the incident, reports the Daily Journal.

She told the paper: "The environmental community is asking the case be heard at the federal level. People must be brought to justice."

The pine tree which protected the bird's nest was cut down last month.

Bald eagle habitats are protected under US federal law and officials from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the state Department of Environmental Protection are currently investigating the crime.
