"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Scottish police set to combat illegal hare coursing

Mon 21 January 2008 13:50 UK — Europe,Other

Police in the north-east of Scotland have announced plans to step up their attempts to prevent illegal hare coursing.

Despite being banned north of the border since 2002, with the possibility of large fines and jail sentences for those caught engaging in the activity, Grampian Police have warned that hare coursing still takes place in a number of areas.

Wildlife Crime Officer, constable David MacKinnon, told thisisscotland.co.uk that spring was a prime time for the outlawed coursing to take place.

"Hare coursing activity tends to increase in the autumn and the spring," he said. "They get spotted more easily and it gives the dogs a chance of catching them."

"Other than some gambling, there is no financial value in the hares and they are often left dead in the fields where they are caught," he added.

Anyone caught hare coursing could face a six-month jail sentence and fines up to £5,000, with a conviction also bringing the possible forfeiture of both their dogs and vehicles.

Help IAR save animals from suffering around the world.
