"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Melbourne Zoo faces up to animal cruelty charges

Tue 22 January 2008 13:30 UK — Australasia,Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos

Picture for article Melbourne Zoo has denied claims of allowing cruelty and mistreatment of its animals to take place.

The zoo has come under scrutiny following reports that an elephant was reportedly jabbed in the foot by a trainer using a marlin spike, an implement intended for the care of the animals' feet.

Denying the allegations, Zoos Victoria's life sciences director, Matt Vincent, told the Herald Sun newspaper that the spike had not pierced the elephant's foot and was only used in protection.

However, Victoria state authorities confirmed that they would be looking further into the incident in an attempt to ascertain whether any cruelty took place.

"The minister will meet with Zoos Victoria and receive a full account of their response to the allegations before deciding whether to take further action," state government spokesman Cam Scott told the Herald Sun.

Elsewhere in Victoria, the Age newspaper reported that Healesville Sanctuary was set to come under scrutiny for its treatment of a number of animals, including a rare echidna and a number of birds including parrots and gliders.
