"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

India to establish eight new tiger reserves

Thu 31 January 2008 12:45 UK — Asia,Big Cats

Picture for article India is set to spend £75 million over the next five years and establish eight new reserves to protect its endangered population of tigers.

The country's government made the announcement yesterday (January 30th) on the basis of recommendations made by its Tiger Task Force.

Much of the money would be spent on shifting villages and communities away from tigers' habitats, Reuters reported, with the investment welcomed by Rajesh Gopal, the head of India's National Tiger Conservation Authority.

"It's a big jump which shows the government has given much importance to the issue of conserving tigers," he told the website.

"If the pressures on tigers are reduced then the animal numbers can recover readily."

Recent figures published by the Indian government indicated that the country's wild tiger population had fallen from 3,600 five years ago to 1,500 last year.
