"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Dubai establishes first ever wildlife sanctuary

Thu 24 January 2008 11:45 UK — Africa,Other

Picture for article Dubai has established its first ever wildlife sanctuary, an urban protected area that claims to support more than 250 animal species.

The Ras Al Khor Animal Sanctuary, in Dubai Creek, has been awarded protected status under a treaty signed by 157 states worldwide, highlighting the importance of the area's wetland habitats.

Hamdan Al Shaer, the director of the environment department for the Dubai Municipality, told the TradeArabia News Service that the park's establishment and development were priorities for the government of the Emirate state.

"Driven by its strong commitment to protect the invaluable treasure of flora and fauna, Dubai Municipality has launched the Ras Al Khor Sanctuary as its prime strategic project."

"A series of measures including the enactment of comprehensive laws and statutory regulations for the protection of the sanctuary and ensuring sustainable development have been taken," he added.

The sanctuary supports a population of flamingos, as well as several rare species of invertebrates, and offers a variety of ecosystems, including mudflats and lagoons.

Help IAR rescue and rehabilitate endangered wildlife.
