"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Chinese police in new pangolin seizure

Mon 21 January 2008 13:50 UK — Asia,Other

Picture for article Chinese officials have arrested four suspects following the discovery of several endangered pangolins at a house in the southern province of Guangdong.

State news agency Xinhua confirmed that 16 live pangolins were found in cages and plastic bags, with a further 37 of the rare animals found dead, Reuters reported.

Officials from the Forest Police Service told the agency that some of the animals were as small as the palm of a human hand.

The raid, which also resulted in the discovery of a bear's paw, follows last month's decision by Chinese authorities to punish two men found guilty of smuggling pangolins into the country with suspended death sentences.

Though trading in pangolins has been banned in Asia since 2000, there have been further attempts to trade the animals on the Chinese market, with Malaysian officials making a seizure earlier this month.

At the time, Celescoriano Razond, director of the Malaysian Wildlife Department's Criminal Division, told the Sunday Star that "The pangolins and the rest of the items were obtained from [within] the country, and were meant to be exported to China as delicacies and for medicinal purposes."
