"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

UK government plans to protect wildlife-rich sea

Thu 20 December 2007 13:20 UK — Europe,Marine Wildlife

Picture for article Nearly 4,000 square miles of sea around the UK could receive special status to protect its marine wildlife under proposals announced today (December 20th).

The plans would see seven areas outside of UK territorial waters granted status as Special Areas of Conservation, helping to protect both sea life and habitats such as cold water coral reefs.

Announcing the proposals, Marine, Landscape and Rural Affairs Minister, Jonathan Shaw, explained that they were intended to help form part of a network of protected marine areas by 2012.

"The UK has one of the richest marine environments in the world. We want to bring conservation standards at sea up to the level of those that we have on land, to give greater protection to sea life," he said.

"I want to see a network of marine protected areas around the UK by 2012, and these seven new proposed offshore areas would be a big part of that," he added.

Earlier this year the government announced plans for a Marine Bill featuring plans to protect a variety of areas rich in marine wildlife from both offshore industry and fishing.
