Dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of suffering animals

"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Pandas 'need more legal protection'

Mon 26 November 2007 13:45 UK — Asia,Bears

Picture for article Giant pandas living in China's Sichuan province are to be protected by the world's first law specifically targeted at safeguarding the future of the endangered mammals.

Authorities in Chengdu, the area's capital, have submitted their proposals for a Chengdu Giant Panda Protection and Management Ordinance to the city's law-making body, People's Daily reported.

Following their submission to the Chengdu People's Congress, the plans would have to be approved by two committee stages, a process that could take up to six months, a congress representative told the site.

Explaining the issues facing giant pandas locally, Qu Ying, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the congress, said: "Many individuals and companies are oblivious to the need to protect these endangered bears."

"Some people have even offered us large amounts of money to take a panda to their weddings or opening ceremonies," he added.

Earlier this year several giant pandas living at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding caught the flu, with staff at the centre attributing the outbreak to visiting tourists, the website reported.
