New pig-like creature discovered in the Amazon
Mon 05 November 2007 14:30 UK — South America,Other
A Dutch biologist has discovered a new pig-like creature in a remote region of the Amazon.
Marc Van Roosmalen was carrying out field research in the Rio Aripuana region of the Amazon when he spotted the new species of peccary.
The creature is about as large as a dog, which has led to it being called the giant peccary.
"One day I was looking at some monkeys, and I saw three peccaries pass in front of me totally silent," Mr Van Roosmalen explained to LiveScience.
"They appeared and then disappeared without making any noise.
"Later, I asked the locals what I had seen. It shows that you really have to see things and then ask people what you've seen. They are not going to tell you otherwise.
"It's normal to them. It turns out to be their most hunted animal."
The Amazon Rainforest is the most biodiverse area on the planet. Around a third of all known species live in the region.
