"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Lost Minke whale still stranded up Amazon

Tue 20 November 2007 13:40 UK — South America,Marine Wildlife

Picture for article A whale that lost its way and swam up the Amazon and into the Brazilian rainforest is still alive and said to be in a "good condition".

The 18-foot long Minke whale swam around 1,000 miles up the South American river and has become stranded on sandbars twice during its journey.

Environmentalists are now considering the best way to transport the mammal from the Tapajos River, where it was last seen, back out to the Atlantic Ocean.

"It is in good condition," veterinarian Milton Marcondes from the Brazilian Humpback Whale Institute told the Associated Press. "We couldn't do a blood exam, so we don't know how it is doing internally, but we gave it antibiotics as a precaution."

He added that it would be easy for the whale to become ill as a result of the stress of being so far from its natural habitat.

It is not certain how long the whale has been surviving in the river, but some have speculated it could have been there for as long as two months.
