US senators look to save wildlife from climate change

Two US senators have announced that they are to introduce legislation which will seek to address the threat posed to wildlife by climate change.
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Barbara Boxer said that they hoped that the new laws would establish the groundwork for a national strategy to address the impacts of climate change on US wildlife.
"As we work to mitigate the causes of global warming, we must also take urgent action to address its effects on wildlife, oceans, and other natural systems on which we all depend," explained Senator Whitehouse.
The senator used the example of polar bears to highlight how important it was that the US looked at ways to help animals cope with the effects of climate change.
"Melting sea ice in Greenland is pushing polar bears closer to inhabited villages in search of food," he explained.
Environmental law firm Earthjustice welcomed the move. Its spokesperson, Susan Holme, said: "Senator Whitehouse and Senator Boxer are taking a critical first step in protecting our most imperilled species, and we applaud their leadership on this issue.
"We cannot sit back and allow animals like the polar bear to disappear forever."
