"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Two arrested over bird killings in Cyprus

British police in Cyprus have arrested two men following investigations over the illegal shooting of around 50 rare birds.

Earlier this month, reports suggested that between 46 and 58 red-footed migrating falcons were shot on the island.

Now, the Cyprus Mail newspaper has reported that officials on the island have arrested two men from the town of Limassol over the killings.

"We have arrested two Greek Cypriot men from Limassol, a 67-year-old and a 43-year-old, for illegal possession of rifle guns and the killing of endangered falcons in a protected area," Theodoros Tsiarlis, temporary divisional commander of the SBA Police told the newspaper.

"We acted from information gathered through police work, in cooperation with the Cyprus Republic police."

Local wildlife groups said that they were "delighted" that the culprits had been swiftly apprehended.

Red-footed falcons are currently listed as near threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. However other experts believe the birds are rarer and that their status should be upgraded.
