"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Rare koala returned to the wild after treatment

Tue 25 September 2007 14:15 UK — Australasia

Picture for article A rare white koala has been treated at an animal hospital in Australia.

Local media report that the animal - which was nicknamed Mick - was found by police and taken to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital north of Sydney.

The rare creature was reportedly suffering from blindness caused by chlamydia. However, experts at the centre were able to treat the disease with surgery and antibiotics and its sight was restored.

Koala Hospital supervisor Cheyne Flanagan told local media: "He came in with a chlamydial conjunctivitis. He had very bad conjunctivitis in his eyes. He's been surgically dealt with. He's had antibiotics and he's looking good."

The animal was returned to the wild at a secret location to protect it from poachers.

Ms Flanagan is quoted by the Australian Daily Telegraph to have added: "In the 34-year history of the Koala Hospital, he was our second [white] one and we've treated thousands.

"You get the odd albino, but a straight white koala is very rare."ADNFCR-1120-ID-18292547-ADNFCR
