Organisations commit to protect Chinese biodiversity
Fri 21 September 2007 14:00 UK — Asia
Environmental activists and non-governmental organisations (NGO) have committed to working to protect China's biodiversity.
The recent IUCN Red List of Threatened Species noted that China has a "particularly large number" of species in danger of extinction.
Now, twenty Chinese and international organisations has signed up to the Countdown 2010 declaration. This is a commitment to try to save Chinese biodiversity.
Internationally, Countdown 2010 is a network of active partners working together towards major biodiversity targets. Each partner is committed to undertaking additional efforts to tackle the causes of biodiversity loss.
"We're excited to be bringing Countdown 2010 to China, one of the world's greatest storehouses of biodiversity," commented Wiebke Herding, of the Countdown 2010 secretariat.
"Countdown 2010 is starting with an impressive array of organisations here. I'm sure that by 2010 we'll see the positive impact of this network on China's biodiversity."
Recently, the government in China announced that it was to stop the ancient tradition of sending rare pandas as gifts to other countries as a means of fostering diplomatic ties.
