Indian officials seek blackbuck poachers

Officials in India are hunting poachers who killed a rare blackbuck in the eastern Uttar Pradesh province.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that the country's forestry department has launched a massive effort to apprehend those responsible for the killing of the endangered animal.
District magistrate of Sonebhadra, Ajay Kumar Shukla, told the news agency that initial reports suggest that the rare creature was gunned down by six to seven poachers near a village called Kanhari.
Mr Shukla added that he has asked for a detailed report on the incident and instructed officials to seek stringent action against the poachers.
Officials added that, while the killing took place on September 4th, it could not be confirmed until September 14th - when part of the skin of the endangered animal was recovered near the site.
Blackbucks are considered threatened not only from poaching, but also from habitat loss, over grazing and interbreeding.
