"Each and every one of us has the ability to look at an animal and see if that animal is in pain. And if an animal is in pain, surely if we are human – if we are caring, thinking people – surely it is our responsibility to try to do whatever we can to stop that suffering."

Poacher killed trying to steal rhino horns

Thu 19 July 2007 12:30 UK — Asia

Picture for article A poacher has been killed by forest rangers at a national park in India, but the guards were unable to prevent the death of a rare rhino.

The Hindu newspaper reports that park officials managed to kill a poacher in the Kaziranga National Park after hearing gun shots.

Forest guards and the police tracked the poachers - who were looking to obtain the horns of rare one-horned rhinos in the park - and killed one in a gunfight. However, two other people escaped the scene.

Other media reports suggest that the poachers succeeded in killing a rhino before their operation was interrupted by officials.

Despite the fact that the Goroimari area of the park is "heavily guarded", the poachers managed to kill a female rhino and remove its horn.

This means that nine animals from the park have been killed since the beginning of the year, placing the species at increased risk.

The number of one-horned rhinos dropped to only 100 at the beginning of the 1900s, but they have recovered in recent years as more has been done to protect the animal from poachers. However, they are still considered endangered.ADNFCR-1120-ID-18216708-ADNFCR
